1 character = 1 byte (8 bits)
ASCII has 128 characters, so each code fits in 7 bits and is stored in one byte.
Unicode
A character set for every writing system: over 150,000 characters, each with a code point.
1 character = 1, 2 or 4 bytes (8, 16 or 32 bits)
It depends on the encoding: UTF-8 uses 1 byte for English letters (up to 4 for others), UTF-16 uses 2 (or 4), UTF-32 always uses 4.
